Norman Frye is a member of our adult program, focusing on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Boxing. “I try to do everything at EvolveAll,” Norman says. He plans on trying Capoeira, Yoga, and Fitness Bootcamp next. When it comes to his jiu jitsu, he’s currently working on his guard retention and developing his butterfly/seated guard.
Norman grew up in Alexandria as the youngest of all his siblings. Family is very important to him. In fact, it was his brother who told him about EvolveAll. Norman always wanted to do martial arts as a kid but never stuck with it. After his brother introduced him to EvolveAll, he saw EvolveAll owner Emerson Doyle doing BJJ and he knew it was for him. He still remembers his very first roll with Coach Damon. “The studio has had a big impact on the person I am,” he says.
Off the mats, Norman works full-time as a maintenance technician and part time in security. He enjoys doing appliance repair and hopes to start his own appliance repair business.
He loves to read (even his favorite movie is The Great Gatsby) and is a big fan of meditation. He says he’s “never been on a plane and probably never will.” You could say he’s pretty grounded.
Norman is a great training partner and we’re so happy to have him on the mats with us. He’s dedicated, careful, patient, and fun to be around. If you see him in the studio, say hi.

“This review is from the perspective of someone new to DC and new to martial arts. I tried two other gyms before settling on EvolveAll. There was hardly a contest, in terms of the welcome my roomie and received, as well as the kindness of the staff and owner. I chose a BJJ membership where I have the opportunity to join about three classes per week (as a beginner, more as you grow), access to a weight-lifting space, and free reign to practice rolling when there is a free mat.”
“I started out taking the beginner jiu jitsu class with Emerson, then began attending the striking class with Herill and all-levels jiu jitsu with Cesar. And I’m hooked on it. I’ve had days where I get off work and I feel terrible; I just want to sit on my couch and drink a beer. But I’ll push myself to go to class and I’ll feel a thousand times better afterwards. I learn something new every day, and everyone — instructor and student alike — is super helpful and super nice. I recommend anyone who is interested in checking out a fitness or self-defense class to come by, and you’ll realize the same thing that I’ve realized: Evolve All is about more than just fitness and self-defense — it is a community!”
