Before she was leading high-energy bootcamp sessions here at EvolveAll, Coach Wendy Coursen built a career in foreign policy advocating for global maternal and child health, supporting independent media, and spending a formative year as a Fulbright scholar in Skopje, North Macedonia. A native of Arizona, she came to the D.C. area in 2005 and spent years at the intersection of advocacy and international affairs.
About 15 years ago, Wendy started cross-training, which is how she first met EvolveAll’s Soupar Sovidaray. Over time, she began to see parallels between the work she did professionally and what she was doing in fitness: building strength, resilience, and the ability to adapt. “Movement offers a powerful connection between body, mind, and spirit,” she says. “It’s energizing, grounding, and incredibly rewarding.”
Boxing became a particular passion. What started as mitt work her trainer added in for cardio and core quickly turned into a near-decade-long commitment. She now trains with her boxing coach (a former pro boxer) at least twice a week. She also loves half marathons, indoor cycling, yoga, Pilates, and long runs. She really does it all!
Wendy transitioned out of foreign policy to help others build the same strength and confidence she’d developed over years of training. She’s a certified personal trainer and is currently completing a 450-hour comprehensive Pilates program with a focus on movement science and physical therapy principles.
“Great coaching can look effortless,” she says, “but it takes practice and a deep understanding of movement patterns aligned with specific goals. I love that there’s always more to learn and share.” Right now, she’s especially focused on creating challenging, adaptable flows for Pilates and refining her skills for effective verbal cueing.
“I’m just getting started, but I’ve already felt so welcomed by the EvolveAll team and community. It’s been incredibly energizing to connect with everyone,” she says.
Outside of the gym, Wendy loves to travel with her husband Eric and their two dogs, Rémy and Tiger. She holds a certificate in French pastry arts and is a strict vegetarian who swears by weekly meal preps (roasted veggies and tofu are a staple). Even when she’s not teaching, she’s probably thinking about building high-energy playlists for her classes. Song requests are welcome!
Wendy teaches Fitness Bootcamp at EvolveAll on Mondays and Wednesdays and occasionally subs for mat Pilates.
