Patrick Schooley and his family have been a part of EvolveAll for over 14 years. His kids participated in the Youth Martial Arts program and some of his fondest memories include helping them prepare for belt promotion tests and the excitement of their Growth Ceremonies. Patrick always wanted to be a martial artist himself, and when Master Emerson started the Adult Program, he jumped at the chance. He got his start in striking, but now focuses on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, having earned his blue belt at the most recent Growth Gathering.
Patrick comes from a military family, which means he moved around a lot as a kid, but he’s been in the area since 1984. He spent 30 years as a management consultant, primarily with one of the Big Four consulting firms. He recently launched his own advisory practice to help clients develop practical workforce solutions.
Physical activity and sports have always been important to him. “Staying active is how I enjoy spending my time. I am competitive, but primarily with myself. I enjoy pushing my limits, testing my abilities and just trying to get a little better each day,” he says. In 2003, he trained to qualify for US Olympic Marathon Trials, falling just short. He still attained Olympic glory of sorts when in 2023 he joined the Beer Olympics on St. Patrick’s Day alongside three friends. They placed second among sixteen teams. These days Patrick is focused on learning ways to continue improving both his mental and physical health.
Off the mats, Patrick loves music of all kinds. “I love how songs can completely change your mood in an instant,” he says. Most of all though, he loves spending time with his family.
Thanks for being a part of the EvolveAll community, Mr. P!

“This review is from the perspective of someone new to DC and new to martial arts. I tried two other gyms before settling on EvolveAll. There was hardly a contest, in terms of the welcome my roomie and received, as well as the kindness of the staff and owner. I chose a BJJ membership where I have the opportunity to join about three classes per week (as a beginner, more as you grow), access to a weight-lifting space, and free reign to practice rolling when there is a free mat.”
“I started out taking the beginner jiu jitsu class with Emerson, then began attending the striking class with Herill and all-levels jiu jitsu with Cesar. And I’m hooked on it. I’ve had days where I get off work and I feel terrible; I just want to sit on my couch and drink a beer. But I’ll push myself to go to class and I’ll feel a thousand times better afterwards. I learn something new every day, and everyone — instructor and student alike — is super helpful and super nice. I recommend anyone who is interested in checking out a fitness or self-defense class to come by, and you’ll realize the same thing that I’ve realized: Evolve All is about more than just fitness and self-defense — it is a community!”
