You’ve seen her on the mats leading classes and participating in the demo team, but how well do you know one of EvolveAll’s newest Black Belts? It’s time to get to know Avery McGrann.

Like a lot of students, Avery got involved in martial arts because her sibling started first. “My sister was invited to join classes by her friend one evening and eventually she signed up to do it. On Saturday mornings my dad would always drag me to her classes, however I just sat and watched while she participated. Then my dad kinda forced me to join.” Seven years later, Ms. Avery recently earned her Black Belt at the Spring Growth Ceremony.

Her favorite EvolveAll memory is about the power of encouraging others. Back when she was a Blue Solid and just beginning to teach younger students, she arrived at EvolveAll on a testing day just after the 8–10-year-old class had finished. She was rushing to change into her uniform and prepare for class when she saw a student who looked satisfied with their testing results. She stopped to share her support and congratulate them. “From then on, this student has never been scared to share their support with their classmates, and I’ve seen their self-confidence increase. That’s when I realized just how much of an impact I have made on my students I—even if I am not the one instructing.”

Avery’s encouragement is contagious, and teaching remains her focus. She is currently “soaking up all the information and tips I can from my more experienced peers.” Simultaneously, she is working on strengthening her grappling game. “I want to get better with knowing more submissions and ways to get out of them.”

Outside of EvolveAll, Avery loves the performing arts. She plays two instruments: flute and oboe. She participates in marching band and symphonic band at her high school. Off the mat and off the field, you can find her playing with her very cute dog Andy.
