When you are trying to be healthy, eating out can pose a challenge. How do you know what to order or which choices on the menu would be best for your personal goals?
EvolveAll and Columbia Pike Partnership have teamed up to profile several local restaurants and ask our fitness team for recommendations on what to eat. We hope this will provide helpful guidance so that you can enjoy a night out with friends without compromising your healthy living goals.
The Celtic House Irish Pub & Restaurant at 2500 Columbia Pike specializes in traditional Irish food and drinks. It is known for its authentic atmosphere and friendly staff. A Columbia Pike institution, the Celtic House has been voted the Best Irish Bar in Virginia and has been featured on BuzzFeed Life, Irish Central, and Business Insider.
You might think a traditional Irish pub would be a hard place to find healthy choices on a night out with family and friends, but we asked EvolveAll Instructor Gina Tune to guide us to the options that might fit our nutrition and fitness goals. Gina Tune is a longtime instructor at EvolveAll and an active member of our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Tai Chi communities. Gina teaches our daytime Fitness Bootcamp classes and runs our programs in Women’s Jiu Jitsu and Women’s Kickboxing. She also offers personal training at EvolveAll.
If you’re looking for a low calorie option, Gina recommends the Celtic House’s Baby Spinach Salad with Grilled Atlantic Salmon. The salad is served with fresh pecans, baby spinach with dried cranberries, Mandarin oranges, almonds, cherry tomatoes, onions, and balsamic vinaigrette. If you’re looking for something a little less traditional, the Hawaiian Shrimp Salad with blackened shrimp, grilled pineapple, tomato, carrots, red onions, and balsamic vinaigrette, is another good option. “Both have low calorie proteins with low calorie dressing,” Gina says.
If you’re looking for something more substantial without derailing your goals, Gina suggests the Grilled Atlantic Salmon, which comes with with mango and jalapeño salsa, fresh garden vegetables, and rice, or the Baked Celtic Cod, which is served with a honey, lime, olive oil reduction. The entrees are “high protein, low calorie options,” says Gina, and both are “great sources of healthy fat and protein.
