When you are trying to be healthy, eating out can pose a challenge. How do you know what to order or which choices on the menu would be best for your personal goals?
EvolveAll and Columbia Pike Partnership have teamed up to profile several local restaurants and ask our fitness team for recommendations on what to eat. We hope this will provide helpful guidance so that you can enjoy a night out with friends without compromising your healthy living goals.
Sabores Tapas Bar at 2401 Columbia Pike blends Spanish and Latin flavors with dishes served as small, sharable plates. The restaurant was named one of Yelp’s Top 50 Places to Eat in the US and it’s an EvolveAll favorite. Last year, we hosted a member dinner there and had a great time. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent.
We asked Coach Andy Wu to review their menu and provide some recommendations. Andy has been an instructor in our Fitness Bootcamp program since in 2022. By day, he is a pediatrician with one of Arlington’s most trusted practices. Beginning October 1st, Andy will be leading a new 8-week Teen Fitness program on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7 PM.
Andy says, “Looking at the Sabores menu, healthier choices would involve any of the salads, soups, cold appetizers, meat and veggies entrees. I would avoid appetizers with fried foods or cheese.” if you’re trying to keep your nutrition on point, maybe go with the Ensalada de Cesar or Salmorejo Gazpacho as your soup or salad. For tapas, the Espinacas a la Catalana or Churrasco are good options.
Andy recommends looking for alternatives within the menu. For example, choose grilled zucchini instead of the fried zucchini. Perhaps at first you were drawn to the Zucchini Frito, “lightly floured and fried zucchini with aioli and brava sauce,” but the healthier choice would be to go with the Pisto Manchego, described as “grilled zucchini, onions and peppers on a tomato sauce topped with a fried over easy egg.”
